Blogging or Vlogging?

I have never written a blog nor I have ever been recorded in video, talking to the camera. I have written long, technical documents and because of the context in which I was producing them, they needed to be extremely accurate and of very high quality. Therefore, producing very quickly two or three paragraphs every day is something that really makes me nervous and if you compound it with the fact that the topic can be a bit blurry, or about topics of which I’m not an expert (say microfinance), or about personal experiences, the task is truly daunting.

Producing videos is much worse. Seeing yourself in the little screen of the camera and talking on the fly what is crossing your mind (in English!) is not my idea of a good time. And the process of editing is long, and painful, and I’ve never done anything like it.

To make things a bit more challenging, I’m planning to start doing this in a foreign environment and without knowledge of how much time this will consume, nor whether the resources that I’ll find in Uganda are suitable for this endeavor.

However, this particular experience is so exciting for me, so valuable for my long-term goals that I’m willing to give it a shot. And more specifically, there is a point that I want to make, something that I want to say, which I believe is important and requires this type of engagement to reach perhaps a handful of people. I will get to this specific point in later entries.

I will try to combine both formats and decide along the way which one suits me best. For the moment, expect short texts of dubious quality and embarrassing videos of myself, trying by all means to smile to the camera.
